Transcript: Obama’s immigration speech

Background & Analysis Videos

GOP’s influencers push for another government shutdown, this time over immigration

Rachel Maddow reports on how the Heritage Foundation is pushing Republicans to retaliate against President Obama’s immigration plan with a government shutdown just like the one Heritage helped orchestrate in 2013.

Vindicating win for hard-pressing advocates seen in Obama immigration plan

Cristina Jiménez, co-founder and managing director of United We Dream, talks with Rachel Maddow about how advocates’ direct action helped propel President Obama to move on immigration reform despite a recalcitrant Congress.

Americans support plan, if not planner, finds immigration poll

Rachel Maddow shows the contradiction in public opinion polls showing broad support for the path to citizenship laid out in President Obama’s upcoming immigration plan, but considerably less support for President Obama’s immigration plan.

TV networks turn backs on Obama immigration announcement

Rachel Maddow notes that while many Americans may not realize that President Obama’s immigration plan contains policy ideas they support, the major TV networks will not help resolve that confusion because they declined to carry the announcement live.

History exposes GOP immigration outcry as bogus
Rachel Maddow reviews instances of Presidents Reagan and H.W. Bush taking executive action on immigration, contrary to anti-Obama Republicans who insist that President Obama’s proposed action in the absence of a bill from Congress is unprecedented.

GOP employs selective memory on immigration
John Stanton, Buzzfeed DC bureau chief, talks with Rachel Maddow about the extent to which Republican animosity toward President Obama biases them against policies, like immigration reform, that they might otherwise support.

Overview of GOP Hypocrisy:

Obama ignores threats by incensed Republicans on immigration
Alan Gomez, USA Today immigration reporter, talks with Rachel Maddow about an expected plan from the White House to protect several million immigrants from deportation as Republicans sputter with rage and immigration activists press for more.

Obama on immigration: ‘It’s going to happen’
President Obama says he’s not backing down from taking executive action to prevent millions from deportation. Now the GOP is threatening a lawsuit and a government shutdown. Rev. Sharpton talks to Joan Walsh and Ed Rendell for reaction.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Summary; Congress is not following Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution i.e. they are not doing their job in outright defiance of their role outline in the Constitution!

What did Congress do this year?

Answer:

They are suing the President over his "Selective implementation of the affordable care act"! Something which is blatant hypocrisy as Jon Stewart explains...

A Bloomberg report reveals that the U.S. government loaned banks $7.7 trillion in secret bailout funds at no interest and then borrowed the money back at interest.

The Daily Show
Get More: Daily Show Full Episodes,The Daily Show on Facebook,Daily Show Video Archive

The Bloomberg Report:

Saved by the bailout, bankers lobbied against government regulations, a job made easier by the Fed, which never disclosed the details of the rescue to lawmakers even as Congress doled out more money and debated new rules aimed at preventing the next collapse.

A fresh narrative of the financial crisis of 2007 to 2009 emerges from 29,000 pages of Fed documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act and central bank records of more than 21,000 transactions. While Fed officials say that almost all of the loans were repaid and there have been no losses, details suggest taxpayers paid a price beyond dollars as the secret funding helped preserve a broken status quo and enabled the biggest banks to grow even bigger.

‘Change Their Votes’

“When you see the dollars the banks got, it’s hard to make the case these were successful institutions,” says Sherrod Brown, a Democratic Senator from Ohio who in 2010 introduced an unsuccessful bill to limit bank size. “This is an issue that can unite the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street. There are lawmakers in both parties who would change their votes now.”

The size of the bailout came to light after Bloomberg LP, the parent of Bloomberg News, won a court case against the Fed and a group of the biggest U.S. banks called Clearing House Association LLC to force lending details into the open.

The Fed, headed by Chairman Ben S. Bernanke, argued that revealing borrower details would create a stigma -- investors and counterparties would shun firms that used the central bank as lender of last resort -- and that needy institutions would be reluctant to borrow in the next crisis. Clearing House Association fought Bloomberg’s lawsuit up to the U.S. Supreme Court, which declined to hear the banks’ appeal in March 2011.

$7.77 Trillion

The amount of money the central bank parceled out was surprising even to Gary H. Stern, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis from 1985 to 2009, who says he “wasn’t aware of the magnitude.” It dwarfed the Treasury Department’s better-known $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP. Add up guarantees and lending limits, and the Fed had committed $7.77 trillion as of March 2009 to rescuing the financial system, more than half the value of everything produced in the U.S. that year.

FORTUNATELY, CONGRESS SOLVED THAT PROBLEM...

Faced with the grim prospect of being held financially accountable, lawmakers come together and cripple a bill aimed at more transparent government...

From The Guardian
: When this financial crisis began nearly four years ago the story seemed simple. The banks were broke and they told our leaders that unless the taxpayers bailed them out and took their private debts on to the public account, then the world would end. Our politicians believed them. We took on huge debts and bailed out the banks. Right or wrong, at least the story seemed straightforward: they owed us huge sums of money. Then as the crisis continued, a new group most of us had never heard of appeared – the bond holders. It turned out the banks owed huge sums to the bond holders too, and so did we. The story of who owed whom began to change.

Gradually the story became less about the banks owing us money and more about owing the bond holders.

It seems to me that our governments and their financial advisers from the banks have a double standard when it comes to debt and its repayment; one which greatly benefits the financial world and punishes the taxpayer.

On the one hand, the debts of private banks and those who own that debt, the bond holders, are being protected from any losses by the publicly funded bailouts. Public debt, on the other hand, at the insistence of the same banks and bond holders we have bailed out, is being paid down at breakneck speed, no matter what the cost in unemployment and the destruction of social services.

RANT Based On Above Video: [1:30] Why is Texas constantly cutting child services? The US is already the top child abuser in the western world according to BBC! Why even put child care in the sequester? Why cut child health in the State with the highest child abuse? i.e. "Compared to Other States, Texas Has a Higher Rate of Child Deaths from Abuse and Neglect"I mean think about it. Each party put stuff in the sequester that's supposed to hurt them, but cutting child services is the main trend in Texas anyways , so how is putting cuts to child health services for Rick Perry a motivation factor? The government there probably welcomed these cuts.

From Dallas News: Texas child abuse, neglect deaths soar 31 percent

From the "Center for Public Policy Priorities": PDF Document showing that "Compared to Other States, Texas Has A Higher Rate Of Child Deaths from Abuse and Neglect"

An even more common pattern...

Rick Perry saved the entire Texan economy using Federal Money but he couldn't help sick kids?...

Stimulus-Hating Gov. Rick Perry Used Stimulus to Balance Texas Budget

Gov. Rick Perry used federal stimulus money to pay 97 percent of Texas's budget shortfall in fiscal 2010--which is funny, because Perry spent a lot of time talking about just how terrible the stimulus was. In fact, Texas was the state that relied most heavily on stimulus funds, CNN's Tami Luhby reports.

"Even as Perry requested the Recovery Act money, he railed against it," Luhby writes. "On the very same day he asked for the funds, he set up a petition titled 'No Government Bailouts.'" It called on Americans to express their anger at irresponsible spending.

Thanks to the stimulus funds, Texas didn't have to dip into its $9.4 billion rainy day fund. Still, now that the stimulus is spent, Texas, like many other states, is facing severe cuts--$31 million must be carved from the budget.

Thesis: Joe Scarborough of "Morning Joe", Chuck Todd & Andrea Mitchell Are GOP (NeoCon) Plants in MSNBC to Help Them Sway Public Opinion

Background:
Information/Press 5 - Learning To Find GOP Plants & The Fake Anti-Obama Echo Chamber

Theory: Joe Scarborough, Chuck Todd & Andrea Mitchell are GOP (NeoCon) plants in MSNBC to help them sway public opinion and win elections.

Introduction To Morning Joe

This particular short article contains EXACTLY what is wrong with Joe's attitude. Since it includes a Daily Show video that makes a great introduction to the show Morning Joe for newbies, I thought I would post this article in full...

Salon:Attention, Joe Scarborough: “Morning Joe” is also a punch line on the “Daily Show” - The "Morning Joe" host dismissed CNN as a "punch line," but his own show doesn't fare much better on Comedy Central

“Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough is confident that his morning news program on MSNBC will continue “covering hard news” despite a recent report that the network’s ratings are slipping, and that, for the second consecutive month, CNN’s “New Day” has beat “Morning Joe” in viewership. Scarborough dismissed CNN, telling the New York Times that the network has become a mockery thanks to the “Daily Show”:

“CNN has made itself a punch line on the ‘Daily Show’ for its phony breaking-news headlines and breathless coverage of random ocean debris,” Joe Scarborough, the anchor of “Morning Joe,” said. “ ‘Morning Joe’ topped CNN in the first quarter by covering hard news, just as we have for the past five years. We will do the same in the future and won’t be distracted by ‘X-Files’ cable news programming.”

While this may be true, Scarborough must have forgotten that “Morning Joe” is also a long-running punch line on “The Daily Show.” It was only a month ago when Samantha Bee performed a 6-minute, one-woman scene devoted to the program, describing “Morning Joe” as a “family” that puts its own agenda ahead of anything else.

“My ‘Morning Joe’ family may fight and bicker and star-fuck like nobody’s business,” Bee said, “but when the chips are down for one of our powerful friends, we pull together to attack anyone who questions them. Because that’s what morning news shows do.”

Hack List No. 8: MSNBC
Believe it or not, the liberal answer to Fox actually makes for worse TV

MSNBC, we’re told all the time, is the liberal Fox News. That’s reductive and stupid. It isn’t. MSNBC isn’t the liberal Fox News for two very important reasons: It usually demonstrates a greater respect for the truth than Fox News, and it’s not as good as Fox News. It’s not as good at being liberal as Fox is at being conservative. Fox is rigidly ideologically consistent, with its “straight news” programs echoing the same talking points and pushing the same slanted stories as its opinion shows. While there’s no doubt that MSNBC is more unapologetically liberal than it used to be, it’s still all over the place, with a conservative anchoring its flagship morning show, objective Beltway “straight news” proponents like Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell dominating in the daytime, and weekends full of … prison shows. But more important, it’s not as good as Fox at being compelling TV, which is why millions more people watch Fox every day. (There are demographic reasons for Fox’s advantage, too, but it’s still a huge number.)

Finding someone using the GOP talking points to mislead the public is easy.

All you gotta do is find the explanations that lack any evidence but are heavy with emotion (they will often use words like "gut feeling" to pretend to have some sort of intuition about the info they are about to plant i.e. it's not a reporter's job to talk about their "gut feeling" on anything, as soon as they do they are not even pretending to report news anymore). Emotional manipulation while ignoring the context is the GOP's whole strategy.

All you have to do to make sure this person is misled or has malicious intent is to make them aware of the facts and see how they react. A plant will never move towards truth as that's not their job. They will either go silent till the next talking point emerges or will try to dissuade you from the facts and on to their side.

The Fox News/GOP method of "news"Called "truthiness" by some...

If truthinews were around in the past, people could have seen great headlines like "Dewey Defeats Truman? You Tell Us!" and "63% Believe Titanic Still Unsinkable."  (03:42)

If a child makes a decision on his or her feelings the first day they ever attend school (or even throughout thier school life) and the question is "do I want to go to school" the answer will be "no" even if that activity is good for them i.e. going to school to get an education.  It's why we raise our kids to do stuff that doesn't feel immediately good so they can have a better life in the long run. If the evidence says one thing but another way feels better for whatever non-factual reason, we teach our kids to follow the evidence. Some kids don't get that sort of help and spend thier lives lying and using thier feelings to make decision especially if being popular amongst certain people is part of the decision making process .

GOP "Conservatives" make decisions with their feelings irrespective of the facts if that feels better to the particular individual saying them (and truth is often hard to swallow thus the edifice of lies the GOP is compelled to create everyday grows and grows without end. All you have to do is wait and they will embed themselves deep in a bed of lies as if they have an assassination squad to silence dissent and facts). The people listening just think its truthful because it's a news channel (that's the power of hearing lies from an "accredited" news source).

Pointers On Finding Fake Reporters But First Lets Get One Fact Out Of The Way...

Did the media push the President to act against ISIS? Howard Kurtz and Lauren Ashburn weigh in on the media and ISIS
TAKEWAY: The news media DOES influence public opinion and the people in the media know this. Obviously the source where people get their information from will influence their opinions, thus the media DOES have the ability to mislead the public... all it has to do is misreport the news, lie about the news, make up facts or simply leave out facts that would help people make better decisions.

Thus for someone wishing to mislead the American People, owning as much of the media as possible to create echo chambers is very important indeed. That said I'm sure Obama has made some mistakes but I don't think any of them have been covered by the mainstream media as they can all be traced to policies signed into law by Bush or Reagan.

List of obvious conservatives (or conservative plants/lap-dogs) in the media labeled as "Liberal" that I've found so far;

This one shows that in any particular circumstance the whole media (MSNBC, CNN & FOXNEWS) can function as a GOP/Fox News/ "Conservative" echo chamber, in this case it was to pretend a candidate didn't exist...

Note: For some reason the feelings of a Governor matters more than his actions. Certainly not a fair and balanced show as they are not holding - nor do they want to - hold someone with power and money held accountable for tier crimes. It;s more like a high school type atmosphere... always trying to kiss up to the top dogs to get to a higher point in the popularity ratings.

In any case, this would be enough except for the fortunate coincidence of catching Joe in the act when he started echoing GOP talking points (as "conservatives" in th e media tend to do) but in this case it was a mistake so we have double proof - besides years of his morning shows where he shows his allegience pretty obviously - of Joe rant non-factual information as news when attacking Obama.
